What is Mining Resin Bolts

Mining Resin Bolts, also known as chemical anchors or adhesive anchors, are a type of fastener used in construction and engineering projects to provide a secure, load-bearing connection between a structural element and a substrate such as concrete, masonry or rock.Resin bolts are made up of two main components- a threaded rod or bar and a resin adhesive that is injected into a pre-drilled hole in the substrate around the rod. The resin cures and hardens, creating a strong bond between the rod and the substrate.Mining Resin Bolts are commonly used in applications where high load capacity and long-term durability are required, such as in bridge and tunnel construction, seismic retrofitting, and the anchoring of heavy machinery and equipment. They are also used in structural repair and reinforcement projects.

Benefits of Mining Resin Bolts

01

High Load Capacity

While mechanical fixings also offer strength, their load-bearing capacity may be comparatively lower than chemical fixings, making them suitable for less demanding applications.Known for their high load-bearing capacity, chemical fixings are often used in applications where substantial strength is required, such as securing heavy machinery or critical structural components.

02

Versatility

The effectiveness of mechanical fixings can be substrate-dependent, and they may be more suitable for certain materials like concrete or wood. However, chemical anchors can be used in various substrates, including concrete, masonry, and stone, providing versatility in construction projects. As mentioned before, they can also be used in exceptional cases where the substrate is poor, porous, old, or aerated, as the resin can smooth out any irregularities or gaps.

03

Durability

Mining Resin Bolts a durable bond resistant to environmental factors, making them suitable for both indoor and outdoor applications.

Mining Resin Bolts are available in three different formats

Glass Capsule (Polyester and Vinylester)
A glass capsule that contains the resin and a vial of hardener. The glass capsule is placed in a pre-drilled hole and the components mix and set once a stud or socket is driven into the hole via a hammer drill.

Plastic cartridge
A cartridge, containing the resin, hardener and various other components, depending on the resin format. The resin and hardener are kept separately in the cartridge, until delivered through a mixing nozzle via either a specialist gun (for 380ml and ‘side by side’ tubes) or a standard silicone gun (for 300ml and smaller tubes).

Foil Pack
The foil pack is a resin dispensing system, providing a packaging solution. As well as it being very light weight, it offers a huge reduction on overall waste. Similar to the cartridge system, the resin components are kept separate in the foil tube until delivered through a mixing nozzle.

How to Choose Mining Resin Bolts

Dynamic loads

Mechanical anchor bolts have a limitation when it comes to dynamic loads, i.e. they move frequently. Let’s think, for example, of fixing equipment, which constantly vibrates. If any type of mechanical anchor is applied, over time, it can open the hole and come loose, as it works through accommodation. Therefore, chemical anchors are the most suitable for this type of application, to guarantee a safe and lasting anchorage. As it works by adhesion, there is no risk of this application weakening over time, not even when it is subject to daily vibrations.

Cargo capacity

As important as choosing a dynamic load resistant anchor is making sure that its load capacity meets your demand. Since each anchor has its limit and, if not respected, there may be deformation or wear.Mechanical anchor bolts have a high load capacity, but if the application you need to do exceeds this limit, you need to choose between chemicals. With this type of anchor, it is possible to expand the hole and use more material, until the load capacity is sufficiently increased.

Edge proximity or/and shorter distance between anchors

The non-expanding type mechanical anchor, such as the Hardbolt, allows less proximity to the edge and between the anchors, without the risk of bursting the concrete. This is precisely due to its thread shape, which does not expand in the hole. As there is no such increase inside the hole, chemical anchors can also be used in applications that require a smaller margin of distance.

Environment type

The type of environment where the application will be made also influences the choice of anchorage. More aggressive locations, such as those exposed to the sea air or close to manufacturing areas, require more resistant coatings. This is because the wrong choice of coating can result in the weakening of the application, putting those who frequent the place at risk.

How to use Mining Resin Bolts

Drill a Hole
Studs are generally available in 8, 10 and 12mm sizes. Dowels, for reinforcement or joining are available in high tensile plated steel or epoxy-glass in 6 -25mm diameters.Masonry drill bits are required for this and you need to allow a standard over-size of at least 4mm on the diameter -an 8mm stud will require a 12mm drill bit and so on.

Clean the Hole of Dust and Debris
Proprietary brushes are available or you can use air, by blowing down a tube (don't suck, close your eyes and wear a dust mask and eye protection) or using a compressor. If you have an old vacuum cleaner handy this can also work well.

Inject Resin Using the Applicator Skeleton Gun

Ensure the gun is fitted with an extension tube of the correct length and diameter to reach the bottom of the hole. Inject gently, slowly removing the tube from the hole, to deposit resin without trapping air.For accurate, waste free injection pre-mark the tube with tape, so that you can stop operating the trigger when the tape appears. Set the tape at a distance from the tube end to allow for the resin that will be displaced by the bar.

Mask the Threaded Stud With Electrical Tape

Make sure that the tape goes over the part required to take the nut, to avoid resin contamination, which might block the threads.Take the stud in the gloved hand and slowly rotate whilst pushing it into the resin filled hole. Complete kits are available for resin fixing if you have a lot to do.

Leave to Cure and Set Correctly

Once the anchor bolt, stud or threaded bar has been inserted into the drilled hole that is now full of resin, before you can fit your gate or whatever you are attaching to the fixing you will need to leave for the manufacturers specified time for the resin to set. This should be stated on the resin container.

How are Mining Resin Bolts installed?

Drilling
A hole is drilled into the substrate where the anchor will be placed. The size and depth of the hole are crucial and must adhere to the manufacturer's specifications.

Cleaning
The drilled hole is cleaned to remove any dust or debris, ensuring optimal conditions for the bonding process. Following this step, adhering to the resin manufacturer’s instructions is crucial.

Resin Application
The resin, in the form of a two-part system (resin and catalyst), is then injected into the drilled hole, surrounding the inserted anchor. This process may involve the use of specialized dispensing tools. It is crucial to note that if the resin comes in a cartridge, before introducing the resin into the drilled hole, it is important to discard 5 to 10 centimetres of the product onto a cardboard or paper until a uniform colour and consistent texture are achieved. This signals the thorough mixing of the two components (resin and catalyst) and indicates readiness for application.

Inserting the Anchor
Once the resin has been applied, the anchor is inserted into the cleaned hole.It is advisable to rotate the fastening element slightly upon insertion to ensure optimal adhesion of the resin to its surface. Additionally, it is important to consider that the resin has a brief window of only a few minutes before drying begins. Consequently, the handling time is limited, and it is recommended to promptly insert the fastener right after filling the drilled hole.

Curing Time
Within the hole, the resin and catalyst mix, initiating a chemical reaction. This reaction leads to the curing of the resin, creating a strong bond between the anchor and the substrate. The curing time is a critical phase where the resin solidifies and the bond between the anchor and the substrate strengthens. This time is determined by the specific product used and the ambient temperature. Many modern chemical fixings offer rapid curing times, allowing for faster construction processes and minimizing project timelines.

How to Maintain Mining Resin Bolts

Periodic inspection

Regularly check the accuracy and installation of mining resin bolts for looseness, deformation, corrosion, damage, etc. The specific period needs to be determined according to the use of the equipment. During the inspection, you can confirm whether there is any looseness by rotating the nut counterclockwise.

Lubrication

Mining resin bolts require proper lubrication during operation. Use suitable lubricants and spray or apply them to the connection parts such as bolts, nuts and washers regularly to prevent corrosion and damage.

Tightening force control

Mining resin bolts need to pay attention to the control of tightening force when connecting. Too loose and too tight will affect the service life and safety of the bolts. When connecting, according to the technical requirements and the specific conditions of the equipment, the appropriate tightening reference torque or tightening angle should be selected for connection, and the torque or angle should be monitored and recorded.

FAQ

Q: What is a resin bolt?

A: Chemical resin anchors are one of the strongest and safest options available when you need to install a stud or anchor into concrete. With chemical anchoring, a resin is injected into the hole prior to insertion of the fixing stud, creating an incredibly strong anchoring point.

Q: Are resin anchors strong?

A: Chemical anchors (I prefer the simpler term 'resin anchors') exert no setting stresses in the base material so can be specified at closer edge and spacing distances in concrete and will usually develop the strongest anchorage in masonry materials-which are their main 'Pros'.

Q: How to use resin for bolts?

A: Safely insert a chemical anchor bolt into the resin. While wearing gloves, slowly rotate and push your chosen chemical anchor bolt or stud anchor into the hole filled with resin. Prepare for some overflow, and avoid getting resin on the end of the threaded stud by masking it with tape.

Q: How do you remove resin bolts?

A: Drill a lot of small holes in the resin surrounding the bolt, then twist and pull. Fill the old hole with glue and cover with dust from the new bolt hole.

Q: Does resin breakable?

A: Watch out for low-quality resin.Poor-quality resin can become more brittle and susceptible to cracking. While these cracks might sometimes appear as shattering, particularly if the resin is under stress or impacted with significant force, it usually does not break apart as dramatically or dangerously as glass.

Q: What type of anchor is strongest?

A: Wedge anchors are one of the strongest anchors available. They come in nine different diameters and several different lengths. The larger the anchor, the more holding power it has. They also come in several different materials, so you can use them in areas with or without the possibility of corrosion.

Q: Is resin really strong?

A: Resin's natural flexibility means it can better withstand impact and is more likely to bend than break, unlike glass which can shatter. Epoxy resin is more susceptible to dullness and scratches, however surface damage can be fixed by applying a fresh layer of resin on top.

Q: How long does a resin anchor take to dry?

A: The curing time of the adhesive can vary from 4 to 48 hours, so it is important not to disturb, twist or load the anchor before it is fully cured. The installer usually assumes the curing time of the epoxy. The curing time for the high-strength anchor epoxy resin to achieve the final strength is 24 hours.

Q: How do resin bolts work?

A: They work by using a two-part adhesive system consisting of a resin and a hardener that are mixed together just before application. The chemical resin fixing process involves drilling a hole into the base material and then cleaning the hole thoroughly to remove any debris.

Q: How many years does resin last?

A: Most other reputable resin brands should last for at least 5 years—again with proper care—before needing to be refreshed. The important thing is to avoid unfamiliar brands, especially those sold by 3rd-parties on open marketplaces such as Amazon, eBay, etc.

Q: What is an alternative to anchor bolts?

A: Mudsill anchors for wood construction projects are a timesaving alternative to anchor bolts and provide support to structures at the foundation. They are engineered to anchor the mudsill to slab foundations, stem walls, poured walls or concrete masonry units (CMU).

Q: What anchor has the best holding power?

A: Plow anchors are well suited for rocky bottoms, weeds and grass, but they are not recommended for soft bottoms. This anchor's high holding power makes it ideal for windy conditions on open water.

Q: Is resin as strong as concrete?

A: The mechanical properties of epoxy resin concrete are significantly improved compared to ordinary concrete, and its tensile strength, compressive strength, and shear strength are all higher than those of ordinary concrete.

Q: What type of anchor does the Navy use?

A: US Navy Stockless Anchor is a conventional type of anchor. Offered in a variety of sizes and holding capacities. With the crown, tripping palms and flukes forged together, the US Navy Stockless Anchor features a heavy head that ha s commonly been used in fleet moorings, positioning.

Q: How strong are epoxy anchor bolts?

A: A 5/8” diameter threaded rod in a 3/4" diameter hole embedded to a 5-5/8” depth and cured at 75 °F for 24 hours in 3,500 psi concrete will yield an ultimate pullout strength of 28,000 lbf (124 kN). At the minimum load time of 4 hours in the same conditions the ultimate pullout strength is 7,000 lbf (31 kN).

Q: Does epoxy resin stick to metal?

A: Using an epoxy for gluing metal is a handy alternative to welding, soldering, or bolting. A very strong epoxy for metal is Loctite Epoxy Metal/Concrete. This product is ideal for repairing household appliances, machinery, and pipes and is also highly effective in securing bolts and screws into metal.

Q: What size hole for resin bolts?

A: We stock a wide range of masonry drill bits-choose one that is at least 4mm wider in diameter than the resin anchor bolt or stud anchor. Before filling the hole with chemical anchor resin, make sure the drilled hole is free of dust and debris. This is to ensure the full bond strength of resin anchors is achieved.

Q: Is resin sturdier than plastic?

A: Although they have similar properties, resin has a number of advantages. For example, it is more durable and resistant to general wear and tear. It's also more eco-friendly than plastic, as it's made from organic material that degrades faster than synthetic material.

Q: Is it possible to disassemble the anchor bolts?

A: Definitely, it is possible to disassemble the anchor fasteners. However, this process should preferably be undertaken by a professional to avoid causing unnecessary damage to the floor. The process can be tedious and requires specific tools and expertise.

Q: Is resin as strong as steel?

A: While not as strong as steel, epoxy resin does offer a number of notable advantages. Steel is susceptible to erosion, with deep scratches causing rust and corrosion issues even on coated steel. In contrast, epoxy resin is resistant to rust and corrosion and impervious to moisture, chemicals, and bacteria.
